THE BLUE VIEW: Elections Next Week, Record-Breaking Gala, and an East County Roundup

Elect Lorena Gonzalez, Endorsed Democrat for State Assembly
The Democratic Party last month formally endorsed Lorena Gonzalez in her campaign to represent the 80th Assembly District. The special election to fill the South County seat will be held next Tuesday, May 21 (look up polling places here.) Volunteers for Lorena's campaign will be walking precincts to get out the vote this Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from the Machinists Hall in Chula Vista (590 Park Way, 91910). To sign up or for more details, email votelorena@gmail.com or call (619) 302-1907. The runoff election for San Diego City Council in District 4 will be held on the same day. To volunteer for our endorsed Democrat, Myrtle Cole, email myrtle4citycouncil@gmail.com or call (619) 320-5214. Myrtle's office is located at 6381 Imperial Avenue, San Diego 92114.

Guests at Democratic Gala Enjoyed Great Successes ... and Surprises
"Fabulous ... spectacular ... tremendous" -- those are just some of the feedback the San Diego County Democratic Party received following our "Painting the Town Blue" gala on May 4. And, of course: "Wow! What a great feeling to be in a room with so many Democrats." We broke all attendance and fundraising records with more than 630 volunteers, elected officials, leaders, and guests. It was a resounding success that we are eager to repeat next year! The gala even attracted news media attention, as former Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher announced his re-registration as a Democrat that day -- and was welcomed with hearty applause at the dinner. (Click here to see photos taken during the evening.)

BBQ This Sunday, May 19, to Support East County Democrats
You're invited to a "Big Blue East County Round-Up" on Sunday, May 19, to raise funds for the East County Democratic Campaign Office next year. You'll enjoy a savory barbecue prepared by East County Celebrity Chef Patrick Dean, plus music by the Little Kings, raffle prizes, greetings from elected officials and candidates, and more. The suggested donation is $25 per individual, two tickets for $45, a family of four for $65, or active military with family for $25. The roundup will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Sweetwater Regional Park Summit Site Pavilion, 4370 Sweetwater Rd. in Bonita, (at Evergreen Rd.) 91902. View more information here, or click here to get your tickets today!

A Blend of Business, Inspiration, and Fun at State Party Convention
Apart from the parties and speeches at the California Democratic Party Convention last month in Sacramento, delegates got some work done. Several resolutions sponsored by San Diego Democrats were approved, and a few locals were elected to caucus leadership positions: Mike Thaller, Chair of the Progressive Caucus; Jess Durfee, Treasurer of the LGBT Caucus; and Susie Ditmars, Vice Chair of the Seniors Caucus. Our own Congressman Scott Peters spoke during the luncheon on Saturday, exciting the audience when he referred to the House Republican he unseated in 2012: "Thanks to what you did last year, when Congress fixes our broken immigration system this year, Brian Bilbray won't be there to get in the way!"

CicloSDias: Mayor Filner's Initiative for a Bike-Friendly San Diego
During his campaign for Mayor last year, Bob Filner promised to organize events promoting biking and walking in San Diego -- with benifits for health, environmental protection, and quality of life in our neighborhoods. A new initiative, CicloSDias, will do just that. Streets will be temporarily closed to traffic in city parks to let bikers and pedestrians enjoy our urban jewels. Three "mini" events at different locations will be held leading up to the main CicloSDias on August 11, which will feature activities along the route. The first event will be this Sunday, May 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Marston Point Loop in Balboa Park. For details, visit www.ciclosdias.com.
