The Whole World is Watching!
The Capitol Belongs to the People!

Urgent: Protesters Inside Wisconsin Capitol Need Your Support

Gov. Starts Punitive and Restrictive Measures

The Wisconsin Finance Committee Announces Plans to Eject Protesters this Sunday at 4 P.M.

Tell Gov. Walker, the Wisconsin Legislature and the Obama administration:
DON'T EJECT THE PROTESTERS!

SIGN THE ONLINE PETITION AT http://www.bailoutpeople.org/wisconsinworkerspetition.shtml

For 12 straight days peaceful protesters: high school and college students, families with children, workers from all of the unions including teachers, state workers, nurses and firefighters have continued a 24 hour presence at the Capitol.

The presence of the people inside is the only way to insure that the politicians and the bought and paid for Governor Walker heed the democratic will of the people.

The Capitol belongs to the people! We built it: we paid for it.

On Friday night, police were ordered to lock doors at 9 P.M. and to restrict people from bringing in bedrolls, blankets and air mattresses to make it more difficult for people to maintain their 24 hour people's lobby.

Prior to this, loudspeaker systems boomed all night long forcing people including the police to wear ear plugs.

None of this has daunted the spirit of those who are participating in the occupation.

But they need your support.

Many inside are prepared to go to jail if need be.

The time is critical-let Governor Walker, the Koch brothers and his rich cronies and all the politicians know that the whole world is watching!

Stop punitive measures! Defend the democratic right of protesters to stay in the Capitol! Eject Walker instead! Defend workers rights! Kill the bill!

[SDCPJ] March 19: WHAT IF?

Freedom is breaking out all over the Middle East and Africa.  NOTICE – Requiring NO U.S. invasion/occupation!

WHAT IF – The U.S. had not invaded Iraq in 2003 and occupied it since then?  The Hussein regime would have fallen along with others today, WITHOUT the cost of thousands of U.S. enlisted military, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives, about $780 billion of your taxes, and hatred of the U.S. all over the globe.

Militarism is NOT the answer.  Save our future, balance the federal budget, and fund REAL human needs here at home!

March 19, noon, Balboa Park in San Diego, 6th and Grape – join the noise, celebrate PEACE, and observe: "Bridges to Peace"

MEDIA  ADVISORY -- IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PROTEST/PICKETLINE IN ALPINE TO STOP SUNRISE POWERLINK

WHAT:     Protest Rally and Picket Line to Stop Sunrise Powerlink
WHERE:     Downtown Alpine, CA
WHEN:     March 1, 2011, 7am
CONTACT:    Ray Lutz – 619-820-5321 – COPS coordinator  -- raylutz@citizensoversight.org

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA (Feb. 25, 2011) – Opponents to the Sunrise Powerlink will be gathering in downtown Alpine to protest the construction of the transmission line by staging a picket line at the work site of the project starting at 7:00 a.m. on March 1, 2011 in downtown Alpine, CA.

Although the project faces numerous court challenges and a new state administration, SDG&E continues to push forward with construction of a transmission line that will never be useful in the future of the region and a waste of ratepayer money. Opponents argue that the nearly $2 billion of San Diego County ratepayer money would be better spent on in-basin solar energy systems, as each one reduces the need for the Powerlink which has no guarantee that it will carry renewable energy. In today's market, $2 billion of in-basin solar would produce all the energy the line could carry. Projects in the Imperial Valley touted as rationale for the project have been scrapped, and there is no current justification of the line that makes sense.

Workers at the site are requested to respect the peaceful picket line by discontinuing work while the picket line is in operation.

The event – organized by Citizens' Oversight Projects (COPs – CitizensOversight.org) in cooperation with other organizations opposing the project – is open to the public. Participants who wish to block the project are encouraged to bring signs and sunscreen and join in the picket line / project blockade at 7am or throughout the day(s). Organizers don't know how long the picket line will last.

"We have no dispute with the good union workers on this project," said Ray Lutz, COPs Coordinator, "and we love to see these people working, but we do have a dispute with SDG&E and we hope those union workers will respect our picket line and discontinue work until our grievances are addressed by the company. Unions must respect our picket line if they want us to respect their picket lines during labor disputes."

COPS and other organizations will be holding a follow-on rally in front of the Sempra Energy building in downtown San Diego on March 7, 2011, at 12:30pm, with march to the federal courthouse where a lawsuit will be heard starting that day to stop the project.

[SDCPJ] Save the Middle Class?

Across the U.S. we, the middle class, are under attack.  We can't afford good jobs, security and decent retirement for the vast majority of Americans?  With a fraction of what's spent on the U.S.'s military disasters, we could save the American middle class and build a secure future for ourselves, our children, and their children.

Your Tax Dollars at Work:

The Iraq and Afghan wars have cost thousands of American deaths; tens of thousands of permanent American injuries; hundreds of thousands Iraq and Afghan dead and millions homeless. YOUR spending on these wars to this moment:

U.S. Wars Since 2001

$1,157,083,036,687

War in Iraq

$776,099,742,971

War in Afghanistan

$380,983,293,715

See the cost to your community at www.costofwar.com

Fight Back!  In San Diego on March 19, Balboa Park, at noon – have fun, make noise, and MAKE A POINT!  See the attached, PASS IT ON!

Frank,

UC-AFT San Diego Local 2034 endorses this rally and I will gladly speak.  This came today:

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Although we hosted a rally last Friday to show Solidarity with Wisconsin workers - there has been an overwhelming cry to do more. We are working with individuals and groups to have a community-wide "We Are One" Rally this Saturday, February 26th at 12 noon.  It will be held at the County Administration Building  - 1600 Pacific Highway (on the west side / bay side). Please send this out far and wide. We need to show San Diego and Wisconsin that we are part of the movement to save the middle class. We must stop this war on workers! We are making a banner and placards, but please bring signs as well.

In solidarity, Lorena

TRAVEL WARNING U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Mexico, Sep 10, 2010 http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_4755.html

The Department of State has issued this Travel Warning to inform U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico about the security situation in MexicoŠ

Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year.  This includes tens of thousands who cross the border every day for study, tourism or business and at least one million U.S. citizens who live in Mexico.  The Mexican government makes a considerable effort to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist destinations. Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico do not see the levels of drug-related violence and crime reported in the border region and in areas along major drug trafficking routes. Nevertheless, crime and violence are serious problems. While most victims of violence are Mexican citizens associated with criminal activity, the security situation poses serious risks for U.S. citizens as well.

It is imperative that U.S. citizens understand the risks involved in travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and who to contact if one becomes a victim of crime or violence. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where criminal activity might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.  U.S. citizen victims of crime in Mexico are urged to contact the consular section of the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy for advice and assistance. Contact information is provided at the end of this message.

General Conditions: Since 2006, the Mexican government has engaged in an extensive effort to combat drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs).  Mexican DTOs, meanwhile, have been engaged in a vicious struggle with each other for control of trafficking routes.  In order to combat violence, the government of Mexico has deployed military troops throughout the country.  U.S. citizens should expect to encounter military and other law enforcement checkpoints when traveling in Mexico and are urged to cooperate fully. DTOs have erected unauthorized checkpoints, and killed motorists who have not stopped at them.  In confrontations with the Mexican army and police, DTOs have employed automatic weapons and grenades.  In some cases, assailants have worn full or partial police or military uniforms and have used vehicles that resemble police vehicles.  According to published reports, 22,700 people have been killed in narcotics-related violence since 2006.  The great majority of those killed have been members of DTOs. However, innocent bystanders have been killed in shootouts between DTOs and Mexican law enforcement or between rival DTOs.

Recent violent attacks and persistent security concerns have prompted the U.S. Embassy to urge U.S. citizens to defer unnecessary travel to Michoacán and Tamaulipas, to parts of Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, and CoahuilaŠ and to advise U.S. citizens residing or traveling in those areas to exercise extreme caution.

Violence Along the U.S.-Mexico Border: Much of the country's narcotics-related violence has occurred in the northern border region. For example, since 2006, three times as many people have been murdered in Ciudad Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua, across from El Paso, Texas, than in any other city in Mexico.  More than half of all Americans killed in Mexico in FY 2009 whose deaths were reported to the U.S. Embassy were killed in the border cities of Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana.

Since 2006, large firefights have taken place in towns and cities in many parts of Mexico, often in broad daylight on streets and other public venues.  Such firefights have occurred mostly in northern Mexico, including Ciudad Juarez, Tijuana, Chihuahua City, Nogales, Nuevo Laredo, Piedras Negras, Reynosa, Matamoros and Monterrey. During some of these incidents, U.S. citizens have been trapped and temporarily prevented from leaving the area.

The situation in northern Mexico remains fluid; the location and timing of future armed engagements cannot be predicted.  U.S. citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling throughout the region, particularly in those areas specifically mentioned in this Travel WarningŠ

In recent months, DTOs have used stolen trucks to block major highways and thus prevent the military from responding to criminal activity, most notably in the area around Monterrey.  Also in Monterrey, DTOs have kidnapped guests out of reputable hotels in the downtown area, blocking off adjoining streets to prevent law enforcement response.  DTOs have also attacked Mexican government facilities such as military barracks and a customs and immigration post.

U.S. citizens should defer non-essential travel to Ciudad Juarez, ChihuahuaŠ

The Consular agency in Reynosa, Tamaulipas was closed temporarily in February 2010 in response to firefights between police and DTOs and between DTOs.  In April 2010, a grenade thrown into the Consulate compound at 11:00 PM caused damage to the U.S. Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. The Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo and the Consular Agency in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, were closed for one day as a result. The Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo prohibits employees from entering the entertainment zone in Nuevo Laredo known as "Boys Town" because of concerns about violent crime in that area.

Between 2006 and 2009, the number of narcotics-related murders in the state of Durango increased ten-foldŠ

Travelers on the highways between Monterrey and the United States (notably through Nuevo Laredo and Matamoros) have been targeted for robbery that has resulted in violence and have also been caught in incidents of gunfire between criminals and Mexican law enforcement.  Criminals have followed and harassed U.S. citizens traveling in their vehicles in border areas including Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, and TijuanaŠ

The situation in the state of Chihuahua, specifically Ciudad Juarez, is of special concernŠ

Safety Recommendations: U.S. citizens who believe they are being targeted for kidnapping or other crimes should notify Mexican law enforcement officials and the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City or the nearest U.S. consulate as soon as possible.  Any U.S. visitor who suspects they are a target should consider returning to the United States immediately.  U.S. citizens should be aware that many cases of violent crime are never resolved by Mexican law enforcement, and the U.S. government has no authority to investigate crimes committed in Mexico.

U.S. citizens should make every attempt to travel on main roads during daylight hours, particularly the toll ("cuota") roads, which generally are more secureŠ

U.S. citizen visitors are encouraged to stay in the well-known tourist areas.  Travelers should leave their itinerary with a friend or family member not traveling with them, avoid traveling alone, and check with their cellular provider prior to departure to confirm that their cell phone is capable of roaming on GSM or 3G international networksŠ

Do not display expensive-looking jewelry, large amounts of money, or other valuable itemsŠ U.S. citizens should be alert for credit card fraud, especially outside major commercial establishments.

U.S. citizens should be alert to pickpockets and general street crime throughout Mexico, but especially in large cities.  Between FY 2006 and FY 2009 the number of U.S. passports reported stolen in Mexico rose from 184 to 288.

Demonstrations and Large Public Gatherings: Demonstrations occur frequently throughout Mexico and usually are peaceful.  However, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate to violence unexpectedlyŠ During demonstrations or law enforcement operations, U.S. citizens are advised to remain in their homes or hotels, avoid large crowds, and avoid the downtown and surrounding areas.

Demonstrators in Mexico may block traffic on roads, including major arteries, or take control of toll-booths on highways.  U.S. citizens should avoid confrontations in such situationsŠ

The Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners, and such actions may result in detention and/or deportation.  U.S. citizens are therefore advised to avoid participating in demonstrations or other activities that might be deemed political by Mexican authorities.  As is always the case in any large gathering, U.S. citizens should remain alert to their surroundings.

Further Information: U.S. citizens are urged to monitor local media for information about fast-breaking situations that could affect their securityŠ For the latest security information, U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department's internet web site at http://travel.state.gov/ where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, and Travel Alerts can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers from Mexico, a regular toll line at 001-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays)Š For any emergencies involving U.S. citizens in Mexico, please contact the U.S. Embassy or the closest U.S. ConsulateŠ The U.S. Embassy is located in Mexico CityŠ telephone from the United States: 011-52-55-5080-2000; telephone within Mexico 01-55-5080-2000; e-mail: ACSMexicoCity@state.gov

WAIVER OF LIABILITY / ASSUMPTION OF RISK

I have read and understood the current Travel Alert for Mexico, posted by the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE, Bureau of Consular Affairs. I have voluntarily joined a Maquiladora Tour to Tijuana, Mexico. I understand that there are great differences between this country and my own. These differences include climate, living conditions, diet, water quality, transportation, medical care, and physical safety. I also understand that health care facilities in Mexico are minimal and that access to all types of health care, including for emergencies, may be difficult.  I understand that I will not be able to expect the same type of health care as I would receive in my own country. I understand that the San Diego Maquiladora Workers' Solidarity Network (SDMWSN) and other individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour are not responsible for my health care or coverage, either during the tour or afterwards. Furthermore, I realize that there are no guarantees against personal injury, robbery, or death while part of this Maquiladora Tour.

I understand that there are specific legal requirements for travel to Mexico, and illegal activity could result in grave legal consequences for myself, the SDMWSN, and individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour.  For this reason, I agree to abide by Mexican law while I am in Mexico. I understand that the Maquiladora Tour ends with the final planned activity of the tour followed by the immediate return across the border, and after this time SDMWSN and individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour are discharged and held harmless in any participant's decision which deviates from this process after the tour is completed in Mexico.

With this understanding, and in consideration for my participation in the Maquiladora Tour, I completely accept and assume all responsibility for any and all risks of damage, sickness, or personal injury which may occur during, or resulting from my participation in the tour, including, but not limited to, those risks described above. In signing this document I expressly release, discharge, and hold harmless the SDMWSN and individuals and organizations that sponsor, organize and promote this maquiladora tour to the maximum extent permitted by law in any state, territory, district, or country.

I have read and understand the foregoing and sign it voluntarily. I am of sound mind and act of my own free will and without any coercion or duress in signing this WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK.

[SDCPJ] Omar Barghouti denied US Visa for his upcoming book tour

Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2011 7:56 AM
Subject: [cjplist@cjpsandiego.org] Omar Barghouti denied US Visa for his upcoming book tour

As some may know, Omar Barghouti has recently completed a book on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.  He is supposed to have a book tour in the US in April, which has already been organized in many cities.  He was informed by the US consulate in Jerusalem that his visa application is "delayed", which has often been a tactic by the US State Department to deny a visa but then have a way to reverse itself if it finds itself under pressure.  This is case of freedom of expression.  Omar lived in the US for 11 years, got his BS and Masters degrees from Columbia University in NY , worked for many years here, and even had a permanent residence in the US before he gave that up to go back to live in Palestine.  He has entered the US numerous time, most recently last year on a 5-year visa that just expired.  Thus, the US has never had a problem with issuing him a visa.  The only thing that has changed since last year is that he publish a book about BDS, and the BDS movement has become much more successful.  The conclusion must be that there is absolutely no reason other than denying him the opportunity to promote his book in the US.

Please see the article referenced below about this:

Omar was defiant this morning and issued this statement:

"Ms. Clinton can sing the tunes of freedom all she wants when watching the news of Arab popular revolts from Morocco to Bahrain, but she is not fooling any average-intelligence person in the Arab world. US policy, especially after the veto cast yesterday against the most benign UN Security Council resolution, simply reiterating universal, long-held facts that Israel's colonial settlements are illegal and thwart just peace, is being exposed to the new generation of restive, fearless, freedom-aspiring Arab youth as the main cause of their oppression, of buttressing and protecting the tyrants that have denied them all freedoms for decades. It has long been exposed, too, as the key partner of Israel in its occupation, colonialism and apartheid. Without US largess, Israel's multi-tiered system of racist and colonial oppression cannot possibly survive.
Freedom, from the US establishment's perspective, amounts to the "liberty" to bow to their hegemony and accepting their multinationals' pillage of the world as fate. We shall continue to speak truth to power no matter what the consequences. We shall continue to struggle for nothing less than full freedom, full justice, full self determination, and full emancipation from US imperial hegemony."
If you are so inclined, please contact the US State Department and the US Consulate in Jerusalem to pressure them to grant Omar a visa.  US citizens deserve the right to hear his opinions.

[SDCPJ] Rally for Abortion Rights! This Wednesday, 5-7PM, San Diego Federal Building, Downtown

Most of you have probably received alerts from Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and Pro-Choice Democrats about Congress's vote today to bar Planned Parenthood and other public reproductive health clinics from "Title X" Federal Funding...  and many of you have probably seen me chattering my reaction about it on facebook.

Together with a few partners, I've organized a rally in response for this Wednesday from 5-7PM at the Federal Building downtown.

I hope to see lots of folks there...  We can't take this attack on the right to abortion and access to basic sex education and reproductive healthcare without a fight!

--Cecile

What:
Rally to defend abortion rights and federal funding for the public's access to reproductive education and care.

Where:
San Diego Federal Building
Corner of Broadway & 1st Ave
Downtown San Diego
(Recommended parking at nearby Horton Plaza, 2 hours free with validation)

When:
Wednesday, February 23 · 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Why:
Congress voted on Friday to bar Planned Parenthood and other public reproductive health clinics from Federal Funding.  We can make no mistake: This is a deliberate and not--so-subtle attack on public funding for abortions and also the rights of individuals and families to have access to the most basic family planning care (sex education, reproductive exams, STD testing, access to condoms, birth control methods, the morning after pill, cancer screenings, and more).  When honest sex education, reproductive rights, and access to abortion are under attack, we must fight back.

Please bring your signs and be ready to chant for women's and men's reproductive rights!

RSVP & share on facebook:

Here's more from Planned Parenthood:

"We are facing the most dangerous legislative assault on women's health and Planned Parenthood in our 95-year history. It is an attack on all progressive health care, service, and advocacy organizations that aim to provide vital care and services to women and men across this country. Americans want their elected leaders focusing on fixing the economy and creating jobs, not pushing an extreme ideological agenda that would take away health care from women.

..."Instead of focusing on improving the economy and creating jobs, House leadership is pushing an extreme ideological agenda through three bills and budget cuts in the continuing resolution that would take away health care from women.

"These bills are a three-pronged assault on women's health. They would eliminate critical access to affordable health care and family planning services for millions of Americans."

  • Representative Mike Pence (R-IN) has introduced the "Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act" (H.R. 217), which would strip federal family planning funding from health care providers that also provide abortion care with private funds. This bill would  have a devastating impact on rural and women's health by denying Planned Parenthood health centers across the country federal funding (through the Title X family planning program) for preventive care, including family planning, annual exams, lifesaving cancer screenings, contraception visits, and testing and treatments for sexually transmitted infections. Learn more.
  • Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) has introduced the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" (H.R. 3), which would take away insurance coverage for abortion from millions of women. Learn more.
  • Representative Joe Pitts (R-PA) has revived the failed Stupak abortion ban from two years ago under the guise of a "Protect Life Act" (H.R. 358). The bill would cut off millions of American women from the private health insurance coverage they have today by effectively banning abortion coverage in state-based health insurance exchanges established under the health care law. Representative Pitts's bill would also prohibit states from ensuring that women have access to information about how to get access to abortion services. Learn more.
  • The House Leadership's FY 2011 continuing resolution proposes to completely eliminate the Title X family planning program, which has connected millions of  American women with health care since Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1970. Learn more.
