[SDCPJ] Please take 10 seconds to change the debate

Please click on and let the UT know you would not cross a picket line (63% say they will!) And let them know that if there is a strike you'd shop and Costco, Food for Less or Other (State Brothers, Rite-Aid, etc)

Please pass this on as well.

[SDCPJ] County Redistricting: Action Alert

Speak out for
fair redistricting of
San Diego County

Tues, Sept 6
2 pm

Please RSVP
to Trinh Le:
tle@onlineCPI.org

Tell the County Board
you want fair redistricting

Under pressure from the ACLU and community groups, the San Diego County Board is revising its proposed redistricting map to account for the voting rights of Latinos and African Americans in the First District in South County.  However, the Board is resisting other changes to its self-serving redistricting plan.

Unless we speak up, Escondido will continue to be split off from similar communities along the Hwy 78 corridor and instead remain in District 3 with more affluent communities to the south and west. One of the many negative results of this split is the fracturing of Latino voting power in North County.

In addition, the supervisors plan to move La Jolla into District 4 with Mid-City communities, and Lemon Grove and Spring Valley will be in District 2, divided from similar communities of interest.

Please email and/or send a letter to each of the Supervisors today. Ask them to:
  • Unite the Hwy 78 corridor communities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, and Escondido
  • Unite Lemon Grove and Spring Valley with communities of similar interests in District 4.
You can start with a sentence or two from these attached sample letters: (Mid-City/District 4 Letter; North County Letter), and add your own personal knowledge of these communities. Please add your own voice to increase your impact and avoid sending duplicative letters.

Where to send letters:

District 1, Greg Cox: greg.cox@sdcounty.ca.gov
District 2, Dianne Jacob: dianne.jacob@sdcounty.ca.gov
District 3, Pam Slater-Price: pam.slater@sdcounty.ca.gov
District 4, Ron Roberts: ron-roberts@sdcounty.ca.gov
District 5, Bill Horn: bill.horn@sdcounty.ca.gov

[SDCPJ] "UCSD Community Stations" opens Friday, August 19 at gallery@calit2, 5PM

PRESS RELEASE from gallery@calit2

KNOWLEDGE-EXCHANGE CORRIDORS:
THE UCSD COMMUNITY STATIONS INITIATIVE
By Teddy Cruz and Mike Cole
August 19-September 23, 2011

Summer Workshop Series
Friday September 2, 2011
Friday September 9, 2011
gallery@calit2, 9am-11am

The gallery@calit2 is pleased to announce "Knowledge-Exchange Corridors: The UCSD Community Stations Initiative," an exhibition and summer program by Teddy Cruz and Mike Cole. The exhibition will focus on displaying two main aspects pertaining to the UCSD Community Stations Initiative. One part of the exhibition will be a descriptive mapping of this project in order to convey to the audience the meaning of this initiative and its operative dimension in building new pedagogical interfaces between UCSD and San Diego marginal communities. This part of the exhibition will comprise wall murals and video loops, diagramming the existing main sites, actors, programs involved in this project as well as the projected new activities that it will generate in the future. A second part of the exhibition will include the production of a summer program involving youth from each of the Community-based agencies involved and UCSD, engaging in a series of dialogues and exchanges across 4 weeks of interactive programming mediated by an OptIPortable that will be deployed in the gallery and coordinated by instructors at each location.

"UCSD Community Stations" is a pilot community outreach initiative that will introduce a series of collaborative projects across a collective body of university leaders from campus departments and centers and a variety of social service and cultural community-based agencies located in demographically diverse neighborhoods in San Diego. Two joint ventures will frame this initiative: The Center for Community Well-being (CCW)-affiliated with the Division of Social Science and led by Mike Cole-will partner with the San Diego Workforce Partnership's South Metro Career Center, located in southeast San Diego, to focus on issues pertaining community health and service, K-12 education and job training in technology fields. The Center of Urban Ecologies (CUE)-affiliated with the Division of Arts and Humanities and led by Teddy Cruz-will partner with Casa Familiar, a social service and cultural agency located in the border neighborhood of San Ysidro, to focus on community-based arts and public culture, affordable housing and inclusive urban development. Working closely with Calit2, CCW and CUE will enable UCSD Community Stations to become corridors of knowledge-exchange that will link the specialized knowledge of the University and the ethical knowledge embedded in communities in order to produce a new form of urban pedagogy. This initiative, framed by Calit2-generated technology infrastructure, will enable San Diego communities to interact with each other while meeting their needs by leveraging a wide-array of resources at UCSD, including faculty and students.

Michael Cole is a Distinguished Professor of Communication, Psychology & Human Development, at University of California, San Diego and co-founder of Center for Community Well-being. Combining a background in experimental psychology and cognitive anthropology, Cole has pursued a career focused on the role of culture in human development. This work eventually led him to engage in research on the design of community-based development-enhancing environments for children from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds. The focus of his current work is the creation of University-Community Partnerships to promote community well-being.

Teddy Cruz is a Professor in Public Culture in the Visual Arts Department at University of California, San Diego, and co-founder of the Center for Urban Ecologies. Teddy Cruz has been recognized internationally for his urban research of the Tijuana-San Diego border. After obtaining a Master in Design Studies from Harvard University, he was recipient of the first James Stirling Memorial Lecture on the City Prize by the Canadian Center of Architecture and the London School of Economics. Most recently, his work represented the US in the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale and was included in the "Small Scale, Big Change" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Below is our press release for our events around the country:

For Immediate Release                                                                                 August 23, 2011

Nurses to Converge on 60 Congressional Offices in 21 States Sept. 1 - Call for Tax on Wall Street to Heal America

RNs to sponsor soup kitchens, food pantries, speak outs on the need for jobs, healthcare, education, housing - and outline the RN plan on how to pay for it

From Maine to California, nurses, joined by others fed up with the ongoing economic crisis, will call on Congress members in their local district offices September 1  to support a tax on Wall Street financial speculation, a revenue source fast becoming an international norm, to pay for healing the nation.

NNU protest on Wall Street in June

Events, from soup kitchens to help feed the hungry and homeless, to community speak outs to street theater are planned from major urban centers like Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Orlando, to smaller cities and towns, such as Corpus Christi, TX., Marquette, MI., Bakersfield, CA., Dayton, OH., and Worcester, MA. National Nurses United is sponsoring the actions.

Nurses will visit the home offices of Republicans and Democrats alike, with a common message. Everyday Americans are hurting, and they need jobs, healthcare, housing, quality education, nutrition, and a secure retirement, not more cuts, as has been the obsession of Congress.

The RNs will be calling on Congress members to sign a pledge to "support a Wall Street transaction tax that will raise sufficient revenue to make Wall Street pay for the devastation it has caused on Main Street." The visits follow a letter sent by certified mail to all 535 members of the House and Senate last week asking them to back the pledge and help "make the promise of the American dreamŠ a reality."

A tax on Wall Street trading of stocks, bonds, derivatives, currencies, credit default swaps, and futures - the very financial speculative activity linked to the 2008 financial meltdown and resultant recession - could raise hundreds of billions of dollars to pay for the programs that .   "are desperately needed to reduce the pain and suffering felt by so many families who feel abandoned in communities across this nation," says NNU Co-President Deborah Burger, RN.

A new NNU video depicts the Wall Street-made debacle, http://www.youtube.com/user/NationalNursesUnited

NNU, the nation's largest union and professional association of nurses, has convened numerous other protests in recent months joined by labor and community activists, including in Washington DC, outside the headquarters of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and in New York City, across from the Stock Exchange, to advance this campaign.

"America's nurses see every day the broad declines in health and living standards that are a direct result of patients and families struggling with lack of jobs, un-payable medical bills, hunger and homelessness. We know where to find the resources to bring them hope and real solutions," said NNU Co-president Karen Higgins, RN.

"It's time for Wall Street financiers, who created this crisis and continue to hold so much of the nation's wealth, to start contributing to rebuild this country, and for the American people to reclaim our future," says NNU Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro.
That point was reinforced Monday by University of Massachusetts economics professor Nancy Folbre in a New York Times blog, http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/22/a-sales-tax-on-wall-street-transactions/, in which she wrote:
"Purchases of stocks, bonds and other financial instruments in the United States go untaxed but for a tiny fee on stock trades that helps finance the Securities and Exchange Commission. In Britain, by contrast, a 0.5 percent tax on stock transactions raises about $40 billion a year. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany recently announced plans to introduce a similar tax in the 27 nations of the European Community.
"Our current tax policies favor speculative investment in financial instruments over productive investments in human capabilities. This imbalance helps explain why nurses' unions in the United States (NNU) have been particularly outspoken advocates of a financial transactions tax. As they put it: "Heal America. Tax Wall Street."
For a list of nationwide actions, see the National Nurses United website.

[SDCPJ] Harvest of Loneliness screens on PBS stations around the country this fall

This labor day season, many PBS stations are screening a documentary that sheds light on the current debate over immigration reform and the use of "guest workers" in American agriculture. "Harvest of Loneliness" has received positive reviews at film festivals and screenings worldwide, earning the Cinelatino Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary at the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival in 2010 and the Best Educational Film Award at the Amsterdam Film Festival in 2011.  Produced by Gilbert Gonzalez, Professor Emeritus of Chicana/o Studies at UC Irvine, and co-directed by Vivian Price, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Labor Studies at CSU Dominguez Hills, Harvest of Loneliness examines what was known as the Bracero Program-a system put in place from 1942 to 1964 to undermine union organizing by recruiting Mexican farm laborers for temporary work in the United States. The film presents extraordinary archival footage and features family members and surviving braceros who typically went north expecting not just good wages but also humane treatment and working conditions-expectations that were rarely met.   http://harvestofloneliness.com

The film is showing in many PBS stations around the country in September and October. Check your local listings, but here are the ones we've heard about so far.

[SDCPJ] Artists Launch Offensive Against San Diego

SAN DIEGO --- Ahead of the upcoming Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair
<http://www.artsandiego-fair.com/> (September 1--4), the Periscope Project <http://www.theperiscopeproject.org/home.html>, a collective of artists, architects and urban planners, are taking to the streets of San Diego with a project that confronts the city's military complex, conservative politics and its reputation as a non-cultural hot spot.

The project in question, dubbed /Drone Ready-Made: Fine Military Detritus/, revolves around an authentic logistical container used to transport the infamous Predator Drones <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/16/rick-perry-drones-border-security_n_928194.html> currently deployed by the United States in military operations around the world.

The impetus for the project is homegrown. The Drones, whose deployment in unmanned air strikes and reconnaissance missions in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq as well as on the US/Mexico border has shot up under Obama, are developed by General Atomics in San Diego County. Their facilities in Poway are in the district of outspoken Republican congressman Darrell Issa, whose highly questionable practices have been the subject of recent <http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/15/us/politics/15issa.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all?src=tp> scrutiny <http://www.truth-out.org/goldman-sachs-vp-changed-his-name-now-advances-goldman-lobbying-interests-top-staffer-darrell-issa/1> by the /New York Times/, Truth-Out.org and others.

[SDCPJ] Movie about Depleted Uranium on You Tube

The Peace Resource Center showed the movie "Poison Dust" at the Friend's Center Tuesday evening as part of Nuclear Free Month. This movie is about the use of depleted Uranium (DU) by our military.  For those of you who could not attend, the movie is available to watch on YouTube at this link:  http://youtu.be/Cr5rnlsCFUk

The movie is powerful and informational, but is also disturbing. Please get the word out to people you know about the dangers of using bullets and bombs made with DU to both our military personnel and to the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc.

~ About POISON DUST ~

A NEW LOOK AT U.S. RADIOACTIVE WEAPONS During the current Iraq War the U.S. use of radioactive DU weapons increased from 375 tons used in 1991 to 2200 tons. Geiger counter readings at sites in downtown Baghdad record radiation levels 1,000 and 2,000 times higher than background radiation. The Pentagon has bombed, occupied, tortured and contaminated Iraq. Millions of Iraqis are affected. Over one million U.S. soldiers have rotated into Iraq. Today, half of the 697,000 U.S. Gulf War troops from the 1991 war have reported serious medical problems and a significant increase in birth defects among their newborn children.

The effects on the Iraqi population are far greater. Many other countries and U.S. communities near DU weapons plants, testing facilities, bases and arsenals have also been exposed to this radioactive material which has a half-life of 4.4 billions years

[SDCPJ] Verizon Hires Blackwater as secuirty to break striking workers

Verizon Corporation hires Blackwater (Xe) as security to break striking workers

It has been confirmed that Blackwater, the private for profit mercenary-corporation that killed 17 civilians in Nisour Square in Baghdad in 2007, is being contracted by Verizon for security purposes (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/08/17/1008089/-Meet-Verizons-Newest-Security-Force:-Blackwater).
At this moment, CWA Local 1104, the union that represents some of the striking workers, was not able to say how many security contractors have been hired or where they will be working but they did confirm the company has been hired by the behemoth corporation.

[SDCPJ] UFCW LOCAL 135 NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

Hi fellow Brothers and Sisters,

Thanks again for your commitment to adopting a store in your neighborhood.  Lately our President Mickey Kaparian as well as the other SoCal UFCW  Presidents have been continuing to meet with Albertson's, Ralphs, and Vons to negotiate a contract and avoid a strike.  Unfortunately, so far it's looking more like a strike than a contractŠ  This coming Friday our members will be voting to potentially authorize a strike.

To stay informed about events please like our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Support-the-Union-Grocery-Workers-in-So-Cal/126942454021360 , as well as mobile updates with negotiations.  Just text ufcw135 to the number 37398.

Once the vote is final I will update you on any relevant information.

Thank you,
Maribel De La Torre

[SDCPJ] Verizon Strike Solidarity Picket - Saturday at noon

Verizon Strike Solidarity Picket
Saturday August 20th, from noon to 2PM
at the Verizon Wireless store in Mission Valley
980 Camino de la Reina, San Diego, CA 92108

Join the ISO in showing support for the 45,000 striking Verizon workers! This Saturday, August 20th at noon, stand in solidarity with our striking brothers and sisters while condemning Verizon's corporate greed and tax avoidance.

The Verizon strike enters its second week today, with 45,000 employees protesting the company's demand for more than $1 billion in cutbacks to health care, retirement and other benefits. But the company's aggressive efforts to win concessions come at a time when it is pulling in BILLIONS in profits. Not only did Verizon make more than $20 billion in profit in the last four years – all while paying NO corporate income tax – it used loopholes in the tax code to get a billon dollar refund check from the IRS. Verizon made $12 billion in profits last year alone. They paid zero in taxes, but they did manage to spend $34 million on lobbying.

Spread the word! Bring your friends and family! Stand up to the war on workers!

If you think the "Debt Deal" stinks, wait until you find out how they pulled off this heist, with the full complicity of the media! This month, ASD brings together a panel of experts, including Congressman Bob Filner, Lorena Gonzalez of the Labor Council, Floyd Morrow, Dr. Jeoff Gordon and Corinne Wilson of CPI, to analyze and deconstruct how an artificial 'crises' was created, just as outlined in Naomi Klein's book " Shock Doctrine: The rise of disaster capitalism". Learn about the real issues and challenges we face beyond the sound-byte rhetoric in the corporate broadcast media. We will explore the economic, political, and media realities we face and what we can do, going forward, to immunize ourselves against such artificial 'crises' that are so obviously designed to manipulate our society for the benefit of the very few. more…

Focusing on jobs, quality of life, prosperity, equality and fairness, the coalition wants to change the narrative in San Diego, getting away from the right-wing dominance of discussion of issues in the media, moving away from, for example, a monopolization of the pension issue to more everyday issues like ‘where are the jobs?’ and other quality of life concerns. By now you know Activist San Diego holds a non-commercial educational (NCE) FCC radio license, with a footprint in rural East County. The license is actually a construction permit that allows ASD to build a radio tower, and we are very busy activists, kicking original radio content, technical capacity and fundraising into high gear.

As if this weren't uplifting enough news for the progressive, radical left in San Diego, according to Prometheus Radio Project (a non-profit assisting start-up radio stations), an application window for up to four NCE Low Power FM licenses may be open for non-profits as early as next summer! Prometheus is calling on radio activists to organize. Let's not be on the late-train, the time to get together is now.

Application process...radio station... why would folks get together? ! Content cooperation--ASD's radio project is non-commercial, and, are you ready for an entirely different paradigm: permission-based, royalty-free, copyleft, creative commons content.

Come to Media Arts August 29th, “a digital gym” where they “hang out, make media, and learn new things.” You will hear about outreach through music and culture with Makeda Dread of the World Beat Center; Art Neill of New Media Rights will reveal the wonders of the exploding popularity of the creative commons and this opportunity in history to be a part of it; Brian Myers will talk about Open Media City Heights, a neighborhood-based web streaming radio station; and don't forget the fire and brimstone we expect to hear from Ian at the Prometheus Radio Project on the inherently amazing essence of terrestrial radio.

Come, be inspired, make connections, organize for your own Low Power FM radio dream application team, be a part of ASD's radio in development, and network for the content sharing that will make us all stronger! Hope to see you there!!
