[SDCPJ] Anti-militarist Web site recently updated

This is to let you know that NEW articles and updated content have recently been posted at http://www.comdsd.org/, the Web site of the San Diego-based Committee Opposed to Militarism and the Draft (COMD).

Included in the current update are three articles from the latest issue of COMD's printed newsletter, Draft NOtices:

- "Paradigm Shift: New Victory over Military Recruiting in San Diego Schools," by Stephanie Jennings, outlines the recent successful campaign to pass a policy restricting recruiting activities in San Diego Unified schools.

- "The DREAM Is Destroyed," by Rodrigo del la Rosa, describes the recent vote to reject the DREAM Act, which would have provided a path to legal status for some undocumented immigrants, but would have pushed a large majority of them into the U.S. military.

- "Jr. ROTC Contributes to the School Funding Crisis," by Rick Jahnkow, explains how this high school military training/recruiting program drains badly needed funds from local school districts while escaping the budget cuts that are being applied to other, more critical school programs and services.

In addition to the above three articles, the current printed version of Draft NOtices includes a commentary on the ambiguous "victory" of Don't Ask Don't Tell repeal, a full summary of the new restrictions on recruiting in San Diego schools, and excerpts from Howard Zinn's On War.

To order the complete printed version of Draft NOtices, visit the Web site's Draft NOtices page.

[SDCPJ] Fwd: High School leafleting

Dear Fellow high school leafleting activists:

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Gabe Conaway & Michael Anderson of the SD Coalition for Peace and Justice will be coordinating the
high school leafleting project. Rick Jahnkow, Larry Christian and I  have been working on this current leafleting project since 2002 and we are very proud to be part of your work that has distributed 125,000 leaflets to San Diego's youth, inspired similar high school leafleting projects in other places and supported the formation of
the Education not Arms Coalition in San Diego. Larry and I are transferring our work into capable hands. Rick will continue in a strong supporting role as a representative of Project YANO (www.projectyano.org). The writing of the leaflets and the coordination of leafleting at various school sites will be managed by
Gabe and Michael who have been leafleters themselves in the past. I have told them of your excellent work to educate students about War and the insidious recruiting that students experience on their campuses. They can be reached at indigabe@hotmail.com or paranoid4areason@gmail.com. Please support them as they take on this great project.

 in solidarity,
 Stephanie Jennings and Larry Christian

[SDCPJ] FW: RELEASE: Military steps up retaliation against accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower with arbitrary "suicide watch", followed by detainment of approved visitor

> Military steps up retaliation against accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower with arbitrary "suicide watch", followed by detainment of approved visitor
>
> QUANTICO, VA, 23 January 2011 -- Military officials at Marine Corps Base Quantico today increased the isolation of accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning by detaining Manning's friend and regular visitor David House at the base entrance until visiting hours were over. House was accompanied by Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake.com, a website that has collected 42,000 signatures on a petition calling for improvements to the conditions of Manning's detention, which constitute extreme and illegal pre-trial punishment.
>
> "The Bradley Manning Support Network is dismayed that Brad was denied contact with his only regular visitor besides his attorney," founder Mike Gogulski stated. "Immediately following a rally by more than 150 supporters at Quantico last week, Brad was put on suicide watch for two days for reasons his counsel could only conclude were punitive. He was stripped of all of his clothing except his boxer shorts and his glasses were taken away. It seems to me that the Marine command is now reacting in the worst possible way to rising pressure on them."
>
> David House has been making regular trips from his home in the Boston area to visit Manning at the Marine Corps brig since he was transferred there from Kuwait last summer. While detained at the base gate, House posted to Twitter that "one of the many MPs around the car says his orders to stop us come from on high." House and Hamsher were held on entry to the base for nearly the entire period of visiting hours, repeatedly demanded to provide information and documents the MPs already had, and threatened with arrest. Hamsher's car was towed away under the pretext that she lacked proof of insurance, despite having presented a digital copy.
>
> At Firedoglake.com, founder Jane Hamsher wrote: "There is no doubt in my mind that the primary objective of everything that happened today was to keep Bradley Manning from having the company of his only remaining visitor."
>
> "This is a bizarre action by the Marines. I think they see the growing support for Bradley Manning, they see more and more people realizing that he is being treated unfairly, and that as the facts of the case come out more and more people see that he is a patriot and not a traitor," said Kevin Zeese, Director of Voters for Peace and member of the Bradley Manning Support Network's steering committee.
>
> In a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week, Amnesty International stated that "the restrictions imposed in PFC Manning's case appear to be unnecessarily harsh and punitive." The letter also suggests that Manning's confinement is in contravention of international law, and calls upon the military to conduct a review.
>
> House intends to return to Quantico next weekend to once again attempt to visit Manning and to deliver the petition.
>
> In addition to petitions and public protests across the nation, the Bradley Manning Support Network has asked supporters to speak out against Manning's inhumane treatment by contacting officials at Quantico. The Support Network encourages concerned individuals to phone Quantico public affairs at +1-703-432-0289, to write to base commander Colonel Choike at 3250 Catlin Avenue, Quantico, VA 22134, and to write to brig commander CWO4 Averhart at 3247 Elrod Avenue, Quantico, VA 22134. We are asking that Bradley Manning's human rights be respected while he remains in custody; specifically, that he be allowed social interaction with other inmates, that he be allowed meaningful physical exercise, that approved visitors be allowed to see him without interrogation and harassment, and that the "Prevention of Injury" order (the military's basis for the extreme pre-trial punishment regime) be lifted.

Since the meeting this Monday night will be largely for planning the March event, I suggest we have a fore-shortened agenda, maybe a very few brief report-backs, so the large bulk of the meeting can be devoted to March planning.  Please let me know if OK, and please e-mail back any other crucial agenda items.  Final agenda will be sent Sunday - THANKS

Please RSVP.

We got short notice, but 2 staff members of Labor Notes are touring California to build the Labor Notes network and will be in San Diego. They also want to talk about Labor Notes possibly doing one of their Troublemakers Workshops here in San Diego.

Dear Community:

We are urgently seeking your support, please consider making a modest, tax-deductible contribution to the Centro Cultural de la Raza for 2011

[SDCPJ] Anarchists Against the Wall tour of North America

Anarchists Against the Wall Presentation & Fundraiser

Thursday, January 20th  @  7:00pm

Activist Center:  4246 Wightman Street

Anarchists Against the Wall (AATW) is a direct action group that was established in 2003 in response to the construction of the wall Israel is building on Palestinian land in the Occupied West Bank. The group works in cooperation with Palestinians in a joint popular struggle against the occupation.

Since its formation, the group has participated in hundreds of demonstrations and direct actions against the wall specifically, and the occupation generally, all over the West Bank. All of AATW's work in Palestine is coordinated through villages' local popular committees and is essentially Palestinian led.

With the increase of legal persecution against Palestinian demonstrators, AATW are now travelling the U.S. fundraising to expand its existing legal fund so that it also covers defense costs for Palestinians. This is in addition to covering a standing 15,000 USD debt, resulting from the legal persecution of Israeli anti-wall demonstrators.

Please join us for a presentation by an AATW founder & Well-known member of Israeli radical left Yonatan Pollak.

Government Informer Infiltrated Minnesota Activist Groups

Secret government informer "Karen Sullivan" infiltrated Minnesota activist groups

By Nick Pinto
January. 12 2011
City Pages

The Twin Cities activists who had their homes raided by
the FBI last September are starting to learn more about
why they're being investigated by a Chicago grand jury
in relation to material support of terrorism.

Lawyers for the activists have learned from prosecutors
that the feds sent an undercover law enforcement agent
to infiltrate the Twin Cities Anti-War Committee in
April 2008, just as the group was planning its licensed
protests at the Republican National Convention. Going
by the name "Karen Sullivan," the agent blended in with
the many new faces the Committee was seeing at meetings
in the lead-up to the RNC. But she stayed active
afterward, attending virtually every meeting.

"She presented herself as a lesbian with a teenage
daughter, and said she had a difficult relationship
with her daughter's father, which is one of the reasons
she gave us for not being more transparent about her
story," says Jess Sundin, a member of the Anti-War
Committee and one of the activists who has received a
subpoena from the Chicago grand jury. "It was a
sympathetic story for a lot of us."

Sullivan told the group she was originally from Boston
but that she had had a rough childhood and was
estranged from her family. She said she had spent some
time in Northern Ireland working with Republican
solidarity groups.

Sullivan at first said that she didn't have any
permanent address in the area, but she eventually got
an apartment in the Seward neighborhood. She claimed to
be employed by a friend's small business, checking out
foreclosed properties that he might buy. The cover
story of a flexible job schedule let her attend all the
meetings she wanted to, and to have individual lunches
with other activists.

"She really took an interest," Sundin said. "It raised
some suspicions among other members at first, but after
the other undercover agents from the RNC Welcoming
Committee came out, and no in our organization did, we
figured we didn't have any. Besides, we didn't think we
had anything we needed to be secretive about."

Sullivan began to take on more responsibilities with
the organization, chairing meetings, handling the
group's bookkeeping, and networking with dozens of
other organizations.

In the summer of 2009, Sullivan joined two other Twin
Cities activists in a trip to visit Palestine. Somehow,
when they landed in Tel Aviv, Israeli security forces
knew they were coming, and that they were headed to
Palestine.

The three women were told they could get on the next
plane back home or they could face detention. Sullivan
took the flight. The other two women chose detention
and were ultimately deported.

Attorneys for the activists have also learned that
prosecutors are especially interested in a small
donation the women intended to give to their host
organization in Palestine, the Union of Palestinian
Women's Committees. The group is registered as an NGO
with the Palestinian Authority and not listed as a
terrorist group by the United States.

Last fall, Sullivan disappeared from the Twin Cities,
telling her fellow activists that she had some family
business to take care of. She never came back. On
September 24, the FBI launched a series of early
morning raids on the homes of members of the Anti-War
Committee and the Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

The FBI would not confirm or deny Sullivan's identity
as a government agent or comment on this story by the
time of publication. The U.S. Attorney's office in
Chicago has said it will not comment on anything
related to the grand jury investigation.

Last fall the Justice Department's Inspector General
released a scathing report that criticized the FBI for
invoking anti-terrorist laws to justify their
investigations and harassment of groups including
Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals, and the Catholic Worker.

"This is exactly what the Inspector General's report
was talking about," Sundin told City Pages this
morning. "The FBI doesn't have the right to spy on us.
It's an abuse of our democratic rights. We're supposed
to have freedom of association, not, 'You can associate
but we're going to spy on you.'"

[SDCPJ] Organize with the San Diego Solidarity Network

SAN DIEGO SOLIDARITY NETWORK

We are a new direct action group that seeks to organize the community against problems caused by employers and landlords in the San Diego area. The San Diego Solidarity Network would follow the model established by Seattle Solidarity Network, Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, and other similar groups. Tenants and workers with grievances could contact SD Solidarity and we would work with them to organize a fight to meet their demands. Whoever contacts us would be in charge of campaign goals, planning, and outreach to others with the same problems while we would help them to provide a model for fights, advice, encouragement, a network of supporters, and volunteer work like picketing, leafleting and researching.

The Seattle Solidarity Network, SeaSol, has been extremely successful in achieving victories for workers due wages, and tenants demanding better living conditions. It works by initially offering a demand letter to the business or landlord with a time-frame to pay and when they don't, the group takes action. Often times, a handful of community members picketing outside a restaurant or apartment complex for a few days is enough to provoke restitution. Read Gladys's story or one of many others http://seattlesolidarity.net/

SD Solidarity is not a service or case-work organization nor are we social-workers or lawyers. We are community members and expect those we help to join in our combined struggle. We are not just fighting to win our demands - we want more people to stand up against bosses and landlords with confidence and with members of their community standing beside them. Ultimately we want a very different world without landlords and bosses. As SD Solidarity grows stronger and more organized we would take on larger fights and support strikes, occupations and other struggles of working class people.

To formally start the group we will publicize and hold a founding public meeting, tentatively in early February. If you're interested in joining us to form SD Solidarity contact us at sdsolidarity@gmail.com or call 619-453-6439. We welcome those interested in organizing as well as those who would just like to be informed of actions.

Who: 11 Yes

Where: Cafe Libertalia
3834 5th Ave
San Diego CA 92103

Meetup Description:

In line with the goals of our newly-formed non-profit, The Libertalia Foundation, we're hosting an ongoing series covering the areas of effective communication and critical thinking. We'll be exploring various approaches and techniques in these areas with each session including either a video, speaker or book study, along with group discussion. I'll be "facilitating" the sessions, meaning that I'll be primarily responsible for providing material and guiding the discussion, but would welcome assistance and suggestions from others relating to content.

For our first session, we'll be starting with video presentations on "Nonviolent Communication" as created and taught by Marshall Rosenberg. We'll also discuss organization, scheduling etc. so if you're interested but not available, please let me know by email.

Please be aware that this event will be attended by a wide variety of participants, from several Meetups as well as the general public. It is not specifically geared toward the subject-matter of this group, but is obviously relevant in all areas of life.

[SDCPJ] Thought for this week - pass it on

Tragedy –

America has become a violent society.  Years of perpetual war; glorification of military invasion and occupation; not just acceptance, but economic exploitation of extreme violence – these continue to feed America's downward spiral.

Your job – YOUR job, is to change it.

Listen to Sheriff Dupnik.
