SILENT Protest on UCSD Library Walk

UPDATE: 2:52AM The Israeli Military has assaulted a humanitarian aid convoy headed to the Gaza Strip and killed at least 16 activists, while wounding dozens more
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2010/05/201053133047995359.html

All students and faculty of conscious against Israeli crimes are joining together for a silent protest and demonstration on UC San Diego Library Walk Tuesday, June 1 from 12:00PM-2:00PM

It is imperative that you attend this rally.

Human rights activist, elected officials, former diplomats, aid workers and activists were en route by sea to Gaza to break Israel's blockade of the tiny strip of land. A total of six ships, including two cargo ships and other passenger vehicles, were carrying more than 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to the besieged region, which has been under Israeli blockade since 2006.

Israel has also commandeered Free Gaza Movement vessels in the past. The Israeli military took action against unarmed peace and civil resistance volunteers. Furthermore, a fleet of so-called Israeli citizens were also en route to intercept and harass the flotilla. AMP and the Free Gaza Movement are extremely concerned about the safety of the humanitarian activists who were aboard the Freedom Flotilla.

The Free Gaza flotilla was on its way to Gaza. Unlike previous Free Gaza boats, this flotilla includes large vessels, it was carrying substantial amounts of reconstruction supplies, medical and school supplies, and 800 passengers from 50 countries. It couldn't afford to fail. It was an opportunity to denounce the inhumanity of Israel's three year long siege and running. Israel said before the assault that it would stop the boats from reaching Gaza, they have done it before and they can do it again: http://bit.ly/9JCCyS

We can not wait until something happens before we mobilize. If we are to be helpful in this effort, we need to begin support activities immediately!

If the convoy has already been attacked or blockaded, our demonstration will be a powerful protest. If it has not yet arrived, our demonstration will be a demand that it be allowed to pass in peace.

Subject: [SWZCMembers] A Non-Violent Communication Workshop at SWZC July 24th

hi everyone,

We are excited to announce we will be hosting an all-day workshop to learn and practice the art of NVC-or NonViolent Communication.  This process of communication is based on Marshal Rosenberg's book "NonViolent Communication: A Language Of Life".  Here is an excerpt from the Center for NVC;

"Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is based on the principles of nonviolence- - the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart.

NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies—whether verbal or physical—are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs, and that each of our actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs.

People who practice NVC have found greater authenticity in their communication, increased understanding, deepening connection and conflict resolution."

The fee for all day is $50,  This does not include meals. (please consider also offering dana to SWZC to help pay for the space)

This workshop will be lead by a certified NVC facilitator.

The time will be approximately 9-5 on Sat. July 24th. We will keep you informed about any changes.
Please rsvp so we can start a sign up list.

To learn more about NVC please visit this link: http://www.cnvc. org/en

Thank you all so much for your support and presence,

When our communication supports compassionate giving and receiving, happiness replaces violence and grieving!

Action Alert: Stop the Gregory Canyon Landfill!

Deny the Gregory Canyon Dump!

Attend the Army Corp of Engineers Scoping Meeting

Thursday, June 3, 2010
6 p.m.
City of San Marcos Senior Center
Horizon Room
111 Richmar Ave.
San Marcos, CA 92069

Why this matters: The Gregory Canyon Landfill is proposed to be carved into the side of a mountain sacred to the local Luiseño people. Environmental Health Coalition has opposed this project from the beginning because of environmental justice concerns. The dump would be located next to the Pala reservation, home to more than 600 people. The landfill would also contaminate the San Louis Rey River, which supplies water not only to the Pala tribe but also to the City of Oceanside.

This is a travesty and a gross environmental injustice.

[SDCPJ] Oops ADDRESS ERROR! Should be >> 4246 Wightman << THURS. MAY 20 @7 pm: SD Community Radio Project to start 2 new FM Stations > An invitation to participate in the Organizing Meeting

Oops so sorry ...ADDRESS ERROR!
Should be >> 4246 Wightman @ Van Dyke

Announcing the initiation of the
San Diego Community Radio Project
An invitation to participate in the Organizing Meeting to
begin Developing the
Activist Radio Station: Community Radio both Broadcast and Internet

May 20th @ 7 - 9 PM

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday, May 20th, 2010 at 7 –9 PM
Activist Center – 4246 Wightman St. -San Diego 92105
(1 block south of University Ave. on Van Dyke – between 42 & 43 rd St.
NOTE: PLEASE ENTER IN BACK DRIVEWAY OFF Van Dyke)
Activist San Diego is thrilled to announce our organization is in the final stages off being awarded 2 construction permits by the FCC for 2 new "full power" FM radio stations in San Diego area.
These stations would bring non-commercial, education & information including emergency information, entertainment and cultural programs to areas where is there is no such service. Approximately 750,000 to million people around San Diego will be able to receive this programming. Our expectation is that the project will give voice to communities and organizations that have been excluded from the commercial airwaves. The development of this project is on a fast paced course and we are confident that we will be broadcasting programs before 2013.
While we are awaiting final approval from the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, we have taken several key steps in advancing the project by coming up with an engineering design of the project and by applying for major grants. As the next most important step, we are seeking the community's participation in the realization of the project. We are seeking the wisdom, the volunteer work, fundraising efforts and specific ideas from talent that abound in our community.
We eagerly look forward to your participation either as an organization or as an individual. Without your participation and inclusion, this effort would be rendered weak and meaningless. We invite you to attend the Community Information meeting, where we will inform you on the details of the radio stations and the efforts that are underway. We hope we will make a compelling case for your vigorous and whole hearted support.
This 22min. film brings the recent Arizona laws into perspective:
WHITE POWER USA
From Aryan skinhead gatherings in the middle of the Arizona desert to the anti-immigrant militias patrolling the US-Mexican border, from the white-supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens in Mississippi to the right wing of the "Tea Party Movement", Big Noise takes an inside look at the resurgence of white nationalism in America.
The inauguration of President Barack Obama was hailed as a turning point in US race relations. The country was said to be entering a new era of post-racial politics.
But while crowds flocked to Washington to witness the swearing in, others were refusing to join the party.
Racially motivated threats against Obama rose to new heights in the first months of his presidency, with the US seeing nine high-profile race killings in 2009.
Meanwhile white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups claim their membership is growing and that visits to their websites are increasing.
In the context of the recent Arizona Law legalizing racial profiling..
Is the racial undercurrent that has long structured US politics reasserting itself?
[SDCPJ] Urgent action to support Mexican Electrical Workers Hunger Strike
Hello all,
I'm trying to get together a delegation to the Mexican consulate here in
San Diego this Friday at noon about the dire situation in the Mexican
labor movement. All 44,000 of the electrical workers in the Mexico City
region were fired last October to privatize the public utility and bust
the union. They are calling for solidarity actions with the hunger
strike they started about 2 weeks.
Here is the info website we have set up:
http://www.upte.org/MexicanLaborRights.html
Please let me know if you can attend. Please let me know if you can get
others to attend.
Subject: [SDCPJ] Nonviolent Peace Monitor Training May 11
Learn nonviolent skills for assisting at demonstrations and other events!
What is a Peace Monitor?  At numerous demonstrations of the past it has been found that the effectiveness and nonviolence of the action has been greatly enhanced by the participation of people with special skills in nonviolence. These specialized participants, or peace monitors/peacekeepers, perform specific facilitating roles for the action. Even if you have not decided to specialize in the role of peace monitor, you may find yourself in a conflict situation in which peacekeeper skills will be useful. In a nonviolent action everyone is, to some extent, a peacekeeper.
Peace monitors help set the tone for the action;  help act as a communication network; help provide emergency medical and legal aid; help maintain the internal self-discipline of the action;they may also sometimes act as mediators between authorities and demonstrators.
This training is for everyone and useful in many settings.  We do have an upcoming demonstration on May 19 at General Atomics where peace monitors will be needed, so if you would like to volunteer to help at that action, this training will be essential!
In order to have enough materials we'd like people to please RSVP; please RSVP to Hal Brody,  hbrody@sbcglobal.net
The visual and vibrant protest will be held outside of the San Diego Convention Center where Rice is scheduled to speak at the general session.  "We are demanding accountability from Condoleezza Rice who approved and apologized for numerous war crimes on behalf of the Bush Administration," CODEPINK Co-Founder Medea Benjamin, has said. "If law enforcement and Congress won't do it, we, the American people will!"
The women's peace group has been in the headlines recently with their protests of Karl Rove at his book signings all around the country (and in San Diego). See more coverage from the Rove/CODEPINK tour here.
CODEPINK, founded in 2002, is a women-initiated grassroots peace and social justice movement working to end the war in Iraq, stop new wars, and redirect our resources into health care, education and other life-affirming activities. We reject the Bush administration's fear-based politics that justify violence, and instead call for policies based on compassion, kindness and a commitment to international law. With an emphasis on joy and humor, CODEPINK women and men seek to activate, amplify and inspire a community of peacemakers through creative campaigns and a commitment to non-violence.  For more info, visit www.codepink.org.
Subject: [AL-AWDA-San-Diego] Re: UCSD DIVESTMENT VOTE HAPPENING IN 2 DAYS! HERES WHAT YOU CAN DO! (URGENT ACTION NEEDED!)
--SPREAD WIDELY--
Salaam Everyone,
Last week our resolution was sent to a committee which I among a few others have been working with to try and move this divestment process along. Tomorrow is the FINAL VOTE that will determine whether or not we divest. They've changed the meeting location to Price Center Ballroom East to accommodate for public input.  The opposition have already started in mass mobilizing emails, letter of opposition, petitions, and propaganda campaigns against what we are doing and will be showing up in far larger numbers than last week. WE MUST SHOW UP IN NUMBERS. THIS HISTORIC RESOLUTION IS A HUGE STEP FORWARD FOR OUR CAUSE. If you're interested in speaking on wednesday, let me know.
In order to counter this and move forward in our progress, we're requesting your help in:
1. Signing this Petition if you haven't already- SPREAD WIDELY! http://www.PetitionOnline.com/sddivest/petition.html
2. WRITING SUPPORT LETTERS TO ALL  OF OUR ASUCSD Council Members: http://as.ucsd.edu/council/roster.php?class=council
4. Attending our big event at this location: UCSD Price Center Ballroom East
   Address: 9500 Gilman Dr., La JollaCA 92093
5. Changing your Profile Picture to the attached file: just until wednesday after the vote :)
6. Spread the word and this email widely!!
7. VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION, NEWS ARTICLES, AND SAMPLE LETTER TEMPLATES AT: www.ucsddivestforpeace.org
THANK YOU!
CALL TO ACTION: SEND SUPPORT LETTERS TO ASUCSD COUNCIL MEMBERS & SIGN PETITION
On April 26, 2010, In Letters of Support, By ucsddivest
SIGN PETITION AND SPREAD WIDELY
Here is a sample template you can use when sending letters to ASUCSD Council members (emails can be found here)
Dear  Council Member, (try to personalize the name)
Throughout history, American Universities have stood on the vanguard of global human rights advocacy, social justice, and equality. The principles of respect, human rights, and equality for all people regardless of race, gender, and sexuality is an integral part of a university's role in a society and community. As members of a student government whose overarching goal is to best represent the student body which it was designed to serve, the Associated Students of UCSD (ASUCSD) plays an integral role in facilitating an environment which upholds the principles outlined above.
As members of the student body, we stand in solidarity with these principles and with non-violent means of accomplishing these goals.
We call on you, as members of ASUCSD, to join us in declaring a stance of peace and neutrality by upholding the Resolution to Divest from U.S. Corporations Profiting from Occupation. This resolution is part and parcel of the historic movement for peace and human rights advocacy, particularly in the Occupied Territories of the West Bank, besieged Gaza, and annexed East Jerusalem. We write to you to emphasize the political neutrality of this resolution– it in no way advocates the targeting or blame of a specific person or group in relation to conflict, but rather promotes neutrality through the withdrawal of any one-sided support from corporations involved in perpetuating the conflict. These entities includeGeneral Electric and United Technologies.
As organizations founded upon the ideals of equality and respect, we stand by our duty as global citizens to take part in the first non-violent movement towards conflict resolution and an end to military occupationBy withdrawing financial and moral support from corporations that fund conflict, we stand in solidarity with the ideals of universal human rights and non-violence. We firmly believe that student fees should not be used to fund U.S. corporations which, directly or indirectly, support the continuation of armed conflict.
Historically speaking, where there exists a system of oppression and injustice, there will be resistance. In the historical development of this particular conflict, violent resistance has been the norm. This Resolution is the first non-violent solution to be proposed to the conflict. As an incredibly diverse group of organizations, we support this Resolution because as a neutral document, it does not target a specific person or group, but instead seeks to address an unjust system of governmental policies that perpetuate injustice.
Sincerely,
(Your name, affiliation, university..etc)
