[SDCPJ] Fw: July 3rd "Sing Out for Single Payer" Road Show in La Jolla - RSVP, few seats avail

From: Anita Simons for PDA Metro San Diego <asimonsays@gmail.com>
Subject: July 3rd "Sing Out for Single Payer" Road Show in La Jolla - RSVP, few seats avail

July 3rd -- Don't miss the "Sing Out for Single Payer" Health Care Road Show in La Jolla!
Dear Barbara,

Join artist/activist Anne Feeney & Co. at "Sing Out for Single Payer" next  Friday, July 3rd, 2pm-5pm in La Jolla  -- call for RSVP & directions, below

Pittsburgh activist and award-winning labor singer Anne Feeney and almost four dozen professional musicians are launching the 2009 "Sing Out " tour after their frustration at seeing the single payer healthcare reform envisioned by Congressman John Conyers in the current pending legislation H.R.676 excluded from hearings on Capitol Hill, despite having 82 co-sponsors and broad public support.  Feeney & Co decided to make some noise.  Modeled after the traveling  chautauquas shows of the 1920s, the Sing Out tour will visit towns from San Diego, CA to Bellingham, WA  to both entertain and inform the public.
Sing Out for Single Payer's  1200-mile border-to-border tour will arrive in La Jolla on the afternoon of July 3rd at 2:00pm,  and features performances by singer/songwriters including Feeney, Dave Crossland, Eric Schwartz, Jason Luckett and Joyce Woodson

As the debate on how to resolve the nation's health care crisis may be heading towards legislation this year, one singular answer has been deliberately ignored in the public forum, despite its popular appeal:  a progressively financed, comprehensive, universal health care system, or Medicare for ALL"  – which has come to be known as "Single-Payer" -- now supported by over 14,000 physicians and growing.

Even President Obama's own doctor has joined Congressman Bob Filner* (below, D-Chula Vista) in supporting a "Medicare for ALL" healthcare plan.  We will present Congressman Filner with an award recognizing his outstanding leadership on Single Payer and HR 676 cosponsorship.

The La Jolla event will also include the first reading of Ladies for Single Payer, a new play by award-winning La Jolla playwright Anita Simons featuring some of San Diego's finest acting talent: Jill Drexler, Dana Hooley, Linda Libby, Veronica Murphy, and Mary Relator.

Seating is limited and going FAST, so please call or email your RSVP

Jady Montgomery: 858-554-0482, 760-271-3328 or  email asimonsays@gmail.com reserve a place.

Volunteers for tabling for healthcare groups welcome!

(A modest donation is requested to keep the "show on the road.")

- Anita Simons, on behalf of the San Diego Single Payer Healthcare Coalition and PDA Metro San Diego
*  Rep Filner will speak at the DFA meeting at 7:00pm on Wed July 1st, at Giovanni's - email Carol Changus for details and thanks!

[SDCPJ] Reminder: Support US-Gaza Aid Convoy Tuesday June 23!

If you are planning to attend the banquet and have not already purchased tickets or made reservations, please do so as soon as you can.  Thanks,

Larry

Please see information below about the Viva Palestina aid convoy to Gaza.  This is the best chance we in America have to show that the bombs and white phosphorous that our tax dollars paid for and the cruel blockade that continues to make life in Gaza so desperate don't represent us.  You can contact me directly for tickets at lchristian14@cox.net or you can make reservations at the phone number and e-mail addresses below.

If you can't attend the banquet, you can send a donation to:
                        Viva Palestina

Help Take 500 Trucks of Medical Aid into Gaza

On July 4, 2009 British Member of Parliament George Galloway and US Vietnam War Veteran Ron Kovic intend to lead an American Convoy of 500 Trucks filled with Medical Aid to Gaza. This Viva Palestina Convoy will represent the largest grassroots medical relief effort for Gaza in U.S. history.

The Gaza Strip desperately needs medical aid. Over 1,400 people were killed in the recent Israeli assault and invasion, and thousands more lost limbs or were otherwise maimed by phosphorus bombs and other weapons. Even now, the blockade of even the most basic supplies continues and makes life in Gaza increasingly desperate.

The vision of 500 trucks filled with medical supplies bought with donations from everyday people in America being delivered to people in Gaza is a powerful one.  It will speak volumes around the world.

Please Join us to Help Make this American Convoy a Reality!

Help Save Innocent Lives

Tickets are $35.00 per person. To reserve yours, call 760-685-3243 or Email

Dear San Diego Peacemakers,

For the first time ever, the Church of the Brethren--- a Peace Church--- is having our denomination-wide Annual Conference in San Diego.  As we do each year, we will have a Peace Witness event as a part of our Conference.  We warmly invite you to join us!  Please see details below, and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Also, there will be a number of Peace-related workshops, speakers, and other events that you would likely enjoy.  That info is also below.   We hope you can be with us to witness for peace and to explore how to best be instruments of God's Peace!

Shalom, and Blessings to you---

Decade to Overcome Violence Coordinator, SD 1st Church of the Brethren

Sunday, June 28 PEACE WITNESS We will gather on the steps outside the West Entrance to the Convention Center (on Fashion Valley Road) between 4:45 and 5:00 pm and walk from there. We will plan to be back to the convention center by 6:00 pm, although people who want to return earlier will be free to do that.

== We will have a simple witness of carrying signs and walking from the conference center north to the shopping area nearby, remaining on the sidewalk, but not blocking it. We will stand along the street near the shopping center, with signs, and may choose to sing, drum, dance, wave at passing cars, or remain quiet. (Let the Spirit move.)
== Signs will be positive messages. They can speak of building peace or of ending violence. They can speak in faith language or not. The focus can be global or domestic/local. The sturdy On Earth Peace yard signs will be available at the On Earth Peace booth, or you can come to the On Earth Peace booth on Sunday afternoon between Noon and 4:00 pm to make your own sign.
== We may pass out flyers, perhaps related to the San Diego Church of the Brethren. We could also give peace-message bumper stickers to interested passers-by.
== It would be great to wear a T-shirt with a peace message as part of this witness. The blue shirt with "When Jesus said 'love your enemies', I think he probably meant don't kill them" will be available at the Brethren Press bookstore, if you don't have one yet.
Here are some things you can do to help.
== Start spreading the word to those who would be interested.
== If you have a good peace banner that you can bring, please do.
== If you are a musician and want to bring drum or guitar or other instrument, you are welcome. We will be outdoors without amplification, however.
== Contact Linda Williams with any questions and/or to ask her what you could do to help. cell: 619-985-3189, lindawms@sdcoe.net

[SDCPJ] Gregg's Plea for a Sit-in

A Plea For Sit-in Participation,

"We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful
words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of
the good people". Martin Luther King

I have been an activist in progressive causes for over forty years, but
I have never seen a crisis like we face today. Governor
Schwartzenegger's proposed cuts threaten the health of nearly one
million children, the livelihood of a half million CALWORKS recipients,
and the medication of tens of thousands of our HIV- positive brothers
and sisters. Leave aside the fact that these cuts mean giving up
millions of dollars in federal matching money, they are deeply immoral.
If a foreign country inflicted this kind of
destruction on so many of our citizens, our government would declare war
on them. I am asking that you engage in something much less violent
than war, but rather to join me in a peaceful *non-violent sit-in at the
Governor's
office at **1350 Front St.** this next Tuesday (the 23rd) at **noon*.
In order to participate you need to do three things. First, call me so
I know how many people are willing to take part; second, attend a
training session
so that we can guarantee that the sit-in is non-violent; and third, come
to the event on Tuesday. If you do not feel prepared to participate in
this act of civil disobedience, there is a rally and demonstration that
will precede the sit-in. No matter what level of commitment with which
you feel
comfortable, I hope you will not remain silent. Dr. King's words should
stir us to action.

Gregg Robinson

For Sit-in Information please call: (619) 225-0377

Where is my vote?
PLease join us in PEACEFUL demonstration in solidarity with the Iranian people and in protest against election fraud in Iran, June 17, 2009 at 5:00 PM in front of the Federal Building in San Diego (880 Front St.).
Friends-
We are shocked by the current events and the situation happening in Iran. Our friends and families, in peaceful protest, are now in danger from vigilantes and other militias.

This is no longer an Iranian issue; it is a human rights issue.

We in the United States have the freedom to demonstrate our beliefs and our brothers and sisters in Iran are being denied this right. Let us join together and support what our families overseas believe is their denied right in democratic voting and in freedom of speech.

We ask all of our friends here in San Diego to help support the Iranian people and condemn violence by joining us in a protest. Worldwide, hundreds upon thousands of protests are taking place demanding a nullification .

We ask you come wearing GREEN, WHITE, or RED - the colors of the Iranian flag. To show our uniformity to the world, we ask for the public to bring signs saying "Where is my vote?" and "This is a selection, not an election."
This protest will be independent. Please do NOT use any political and partisan slogans and flags and refrain from provocative slogans.
Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Time:05:00 pm
Location: San Diego Federal Building

Please spread the word and invite your friends and contacts in media and invite them to join us on our effort in support of the Iranian democracy movement.

Re: [SDCPJ] thanks everyone who supported David Morales

Thanks to all of you who responded yesterday with calls and letters in support of David Morales who was not allowed to take part in graduation at Mission Bay High School.  The e-mails below are from various friends/supporters of David's who rallied for his support.

In a message dated 6/15/2009 9:14:43 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, brujita8106@yahoo.com writes:
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that sent the letters to the principal, board and superintendent.  Also thanks to all those who also called the principal and left messages.  Although David was still not allowed to walk,  there was a lot of people who showed up to support and pass out flyers outside the graduation.  Thanks to everyone who came out!!!
There was several students and other supporters who went into the graduation and chanted out David's name.  There was a good response from people!!!
And David...CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Con Respeto,
***Fernanda, Enrique, & Octavio

***********************************************************

Ditto to everything that Fernando, Enrique and Octavio just reported, and a huge thanks to THEM for getting this action going.

A few more things...

I just saw the report by channel 17.  It was good, pointing out what we know to be the true reason that David didn't walk...his activism.  They showed footage from our previous struggles...the shooting ranges and  A-G.  Wow...they found David in A LOT of old footage.  Many thanks to Marco and Univision

Inside the graduation ceremony...we boo-ed Seelos when she stood up to speak and when she finished her typically boring "words of wisdom."   She definitely heard us and I'm sorry I didn't get a picture of the look on her face.

When the ceremony ended, we were still standing on the sidewalk with signs and flyers.  Many people honked, shouted and waved in support of David.  I would say that his graduation ceremony was more exciting than that of his classmates inside the stadium.

Please pass these emails on to all the organizations that helped us.  THANK YOU!!

[SDCPJ] Urgent action needed: Mission Bay High Graduating Senior needs your support today!!!

Urgent Action Needed: Mission Bay High School Graduating Senior needs your support!!

David Morales, a graduating Senior at Mission Bay High  School is NOT being allowed to walk with his fellow classmates today, Monday, June 15th, 2009, for 'walking out' on May 1st, 2009.

David has been very active in the Education Not Arms Coalition (ENAC), and other community groups to help organize against rifle shooting ranges at local high schools, and has advocated for policies that would help put all San Diego Unified School District high school students on a path to college.

We believe that he is not being allowed to walk at the graduation ceremony by the principal at Mission Bay High, Cheryl Seelos, in retaliation for his participation in these organizing efforts.

Please support David Morales, and all students who stand up for social justice!

[SDCPJ] Support US-Gaza Aid Convoy!

Help Save Gaza: Viva Palestina Fundraising Banquet with George Galloway MP

[SDCPJ] Viva Palestina USA: It's time to make a difference.

From: Marya
Sent: Thursday, June 11, 2009 1:08 AMDear Friend,

We were all moved to grief and anger when Israel launched its murderous bombardment against the people of Gaza during winter. Millions took to the streets in unprecedented protests around the globe. Each and every one of us has asked ourselves what more we can do to help stop the suffering.

The inspirational anti-war and pro-Palestinian British MP, George Galloway, decided to organize a humanitarian convoy from Britain to Gaza, driving through France and Spain, and across North Africa. In five short weeks, he pulled together 107 vehicles 255 people and $2 million of aid. Some 23 days and 5,500 miles later it arrived in Gaza to tumultuous acclaim.

Now, Galloway is heading a second convoy - this time from the USA. The Vietnam War veteran, Ron Kovic, whose experiences in the war led him to become a life-long advocate of a more just US foreign policy, has readily agreed to be co-leader of the convoy. The convoy's aim is to take hundreds of US citizens in 500 vehicles, bearing $10 million in medical aid from Cairo to Gaza. This is set to be the biggest single aid effort for Palestine ever to leave US shores.
