[SDCPJ] important school board survey

Hi all you peace activists and counter recruitment activists! Below
is a link to the SD Unified district web page. Under news is a
district survey. This is a survey anyone can take on your opinions
about cuts to the schools. Included is a place to vote on cutting
JROTC. If you have a couple of minutes please take the survey. You
can bet all the military supporters will be taking it. You may also
help direct the district towards more humane budget cuts.

[SDCPJ] FW: Friendship Park this Sunday

The Friends of Friendship Park coalition will return to the park this Sunday afternoon and once again seek to celebrate communion with friends in Tijuana.  We will meet at 2:30 p.m. at the entrance to Border Field State Park.  Take Hwy 5 South, exit Dairy Mart Road, turn right and follow the winding road west to the park entrance.  Wear boots for hiking and bring documents verifying residence in the United States.  I hope you can join us.

Below my signature you can see a photo of the new chain-link fence that has been erected to eliminate beach access.  This will present us with some difficult choices on Sunday, which we will discuss together before hiking to the beach.

Thank you all for your nonviolent response to the extreme conditions of our event last Saturday, February 21.  To read an account of my experience last Saturday, see this blog post at Sojourners on-line.

There are several things you can do to support the effort, even if you are unable to participate on Sunday:

1)      You can send a letter on-line to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano – be sure to mention “Friendship Park” when you personalize your letter.

2)      You can donate now to support the costs of our events at the Park – be sure to indicate “Friendship Park” in the “dedication” line.

Adelante.

[SDCPJ] Spread the word to high school students

After a bit of a hiatus it's time to get out there and share the good news to high school students in the county.

The news that students have been organizing and winning at the San Diego Unified school board!  See link: http://www.projectyano.org/educationnotarms/

These students teach peace and advocate for a college bound education instead of being tracked into the military.

Let's help spread the word to more students throughout the county.

Please e-mail me if you can join us the week of March 9th.
Send me the school you'd like to leaflet or neighborhood where you can pass out flyers & best days of the week for you.

We'll put a team together and get the flyers to you along with directions and support.

Hoping to hear from a lot of you... we need to get info into thousands of students hands & continue building this exciting youth movement for peace and justice!

Feel free to contact me with any questions-
in solidarity,

[SDCPJ] [Fwd: March Forth on March 4th]

[SDCPJ] REMINDER - Study Gandhi with Nonviolent Peaceforce San Diego and more!

Nonviolent Peaceforce San Diego invites you to join us in celebrating the Season for Nonviolence 2009

Gandhi King Chavez Season for Nonviolence, January 30 - April 4, is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world.

"A Force More Powerful – Nashville Counter Sit-In"   NPSD and community members are invited to attend a showing and discussion of the Nashville Counter Sit-In portion of the film "A Force More Powerful" on Thurs. Feb. 26, 4-5:30 pm in building S5 Room 106 on the Miramar College campus.  "A Force More Powerful" is a 2000 PBS documentary that investigates nonviolence movements that have succeeded around the world.

Directions:  Please allow extra time for getting lost.  Construction is changing the parking situation and access every day.  Corrie Ort is organizing this for students and interested community members.  You can call Corrie on her  cell phone (760-822-8655) to let her know you are coming (or to let her know you are lost) and she will get you visitor's parking permit .

Take I-15 north to Carroll Canyon Rd. and turn west (left) on Carroll Canyon. Go to Black Mountain Rd. and turn right. >From Black Mountain Road, turn east on Hillery. Hillery Drive is a street just north of the main entrance to the campus. You'll drive behind Home Depot. Go through a light, and then turn right before the apartment buildings. That's the back entrance to Miramar College. You'll see a pink, two story building on the right. That's the S5 Building. There will be a right turn into a parking lot in front of the S5 Building. Park anywhere there is a parking space. At that time of the day there shouldn't be a problem. Room 106 is at the far north-east corner of building S5.

Study Gandhi with NPSD   We invite you to join us on Saturday, March 7 for a study/discussion session "Living Nonviolence – The Wisdom of Gandhi (in his own words)", 1:15 pm, Library, St. David's Episcopal Church, 5050 Milton, San Diego (Clairemont neighborhood).

Or we invite you to host your own study/discussion session "Living Nonviolence – The Wisdom of Gandhi (in his own words).  We encourage you to invite friends to come to your home or sponsor a session at your church or community center.  Attached is a packet of materials to guide you.  You do not have to have studied Gandhi to lead this group.  If you cannot join us or organize your own session we invite you to study the materials on your own!  Also we would love to hear from you if you did use these materials on your own or in a group.

Co-sponsor or participate in Nonviolent Conflict Intervention Training   Last year NPSD co-sponsored six one-day Nonviolent Conflict Intervention (NCI) trainings with local churches and community organizations.  We are looking for co-sponsors again this year. If you are interested in attending a training (we will put you on a contact list) or are part of a group that might be interested in being a co-sponsor, please contact us.  We also offer a practice/introduction NCI session after our monthly meetings held the first Saturday of every month (see previous section for time and directions).  You do not have to have attended NCI Training to participate.

About Nonviolent Peaceforce  NP was conceived in 1999 as a continuation of Gandhi's vision of a "Shanti Sena", or peace army. NP recruits, trains and financially supports civilians from around the world who deploy in areas of conflict. NP teams are nonpartisan and unarmed. NP peacekeeping forces apply proven nonviolent strategies to protect human rights, deter violence, and help create space for local peacemakers to carry out their work. More, information about the Nonviolent Peaceforce can be found at www.nonviolentpeaceforce.org.   NPSD supports international activities through community education, training, and fund-raising.

NPSD looks forward to working with the San Diego community to celebrate, study, and practice nonviolence during 2009 and in the coming year(s).  We invite you to become an NPSD member or volunteer.  We need volunteers to help with community outreach (tabling, speaking about NP, and telephone follow-up) and organizing NCI (Nonviolence Conflict Intervention) Trainings.  We will train and support you.

For information about NPSD contact me, carrollboone@yahoo.com, 619-697-3223; Debby Park, rayandeb@gmail.com, 858-270-59768; or Gloria Joyce, Gloria@NPSanD.org, 619-276-5232.

[SDCPJ] Pots and Pans for Peace!

POTS AND PANS FOR PEACE!

.... and pens, pencils, paper, hats, gloves, etc. too!  Since most people's first reaction will likely be, "HUH?!"---- let me follow up quickly with "Citizen Diplomacy: Reaching out to the needy people in Afghanistan!"

We have an opportunity to let the people of Afghanistan know that the people of the United States care about them, by filling "flat rate" boxes of donations to be shipped to Afghanistan!  Help put a smile on the face of a child half a world away!

The San Diego First Church of the Brethren, a Historic and Living  Peace Church, recently became aware of  this wonderful way to help meet the needs of God's children in Afghanistan.  During our "Sharing of Community Life" time in our Worship Service, a member recently shared that his neighbor's son, Ed, was stationed in Afghanistan, and was appalled by the poverty level there.

As Ed's mother shared,
"Ed told me that the need is great for clothes for the children such as shoes, hats, gloves, coats, shirts and pants.  School supplies are needed.  People cook over an open campfire and metal pots and pans, not Teflon, would be good. He even mentioned plastic containers. They do not use silverware, but probably a big spoon would be nice.

As for collecting items to be sent, Ed said gently used goods are just fine, so anyone doing Spring Cleaning could donate those items too. I have gone to the dollar store to buy hats, gloves, and other clothes for the children. Thank you so much for your interest as the need is great, and material items reach individuals at the grass roots level."

We invite you to join us in this humanitarian effort!  To participate, please bring your donations to:

Donations can be dropped off
* in the Sanctuary (the largest building) on Sundays 9am-12:30pm.
**Please note: our Worship Service is 10:15-11:30--- Visitors are always warmly welcomed!
* at the church office (the building closest to the street) 9am-12pm, Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays
* Monetary donations to cover the postage ($10.95 per 5.5"x12"x12" flat-rate box) are certainly welcome and needed, as well, and could be put through the mail slot in the door of the Church Office at any time, day or night.

THANK YOU for caring and sharing!

[SDCPJ] Follow-up on San Diego decision to ban JROTC weapons training

The video of the school board hearing and decision that terminated JROTC weapons training in San Diego schools is now available for online viewing. It's part two of the televised board meeting (it was a looonnnnnggg board meeting). Below is the link to that part. The shooting range resolution comes up near the beginning, after the first few minutes.

If you have never had the experience of going to a school board for policy changes, this is a good tutorial on at least the public meeting part of the process. The camera doesn't point back at the 250 people in the audience, most of whom were waiving bright orange "NO WEAPONS TRAINING" signs; some also held up signs with the names of their schools.

By the way, the news was taken badly by the NRA and similar groups. For example: http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=4422. Their web sites have been generating negative mail and some nasty messages to us.

We've also had word that some JROTC people have met with one school board member (Shelia Jackson) to strategize on getting the decision reversed. The struggle is ongoing, but we also have reason to celebrate.

The Farce of the Fence

“The Farce of The Fence”

“National” boundaries are Not Natural Boundaries. Borders [mental and physical] may be viewed as a method of defense, or a means of entrapment. We are manipulated by outside forces to propagate the Former, and often blind to the consequences of the latter. True security lies in personal confidence. The physically and mentally weak are only vulnerable to assailants when the insecurity of others allows it to be so.

[SDCPJ] FW: FYI URGENT__BORDER WALL CRISIS

Friends – what happens in Brownsville tomorrow night may well set a precedent for what happens in San Diego and Friendship Park.  Thank you for following the instructions in the e-mail below and making San Diego’s voice heard all the way to the other end of the border.

FYI  URGENT!

Message #2623 of 2627 < Prev | Next >

To Everyone Opposed to the Border Wall,

The Brownsville City Commission is on the verge of making a deal with DHS.  This deal has immediate and long-term implications for border wall opposition nationwide.  If the the City of Brownsville enters into a deal with DHS, all hope for a last minute halt to border wall construction from the Obama administration may be lost.  In addition, a change in Brownsville's position could undermine all litigation related to the border wall, including El Paso's appeal to the Supreme Court.  Brownsville's failure to fight something that is so clearly an injustice and an imposition by the federal goverment may eventually lead to increased militarization of our borders over the long haul.

The deal itself is a bad one.  The commissioners are touting the fact that DHS will build "temporary fencing" on Brownsville property, but the contract stipulates that before such temporary fencing comes down, Brownsville will have to pay the entire cost of constructing a new wall, this time a permanent concrete border wall built into the levee.  These levee-border walls have cost Hidalgo County $10-12 million per mile.  Since these walls become an inextricable part of the flood-control levee system, they will never be removed, even if we are one day successful in implementing a saner border policy.  However U.S. immigration policy changes over the coming decades, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be living walls because of the levee-border wall design.

No Border Wall urges everyone, regardless of where you live, to make your voices heard and let Brownsville City Commissioners know that you too are a stakeholder.  If you live in the Rio Grande Valley, please make a concerted effort to attend the City Commission Public Hearing this Thursday night, February 12 at 5:30 pm at the City Commissioners' Court on the 2nd floor of the City Hall/Federal Building on the corner of 10th and Elizabeth Streets in Brownsville.  Plan to arrive 15 minutes early if possible to sign up for a public comment.

If you live elsewhere or are unable to attend the public hearing, please copy and paste the following email addresses and send an email to the Brownsville mayor and city commissioners, letting them know that it's not only the future of Brownsville that's at stake, but the future of our borderlands and our nation as a whole.  You might tell them of your community's experience dealing with DHS and border wall construction and your group's ongoing efforts to stop wall construction.

[SDCPJ] San Diego Silences JROTC guns

San Diego Silences JROTC Guns

Contact: Education Not Arms Coalition, educationnotarms@gmail.com

February 10, 2009 (see photos below) - San Diego Unified, located in the middle of one of the largest military complexes in the world, took the uncharacteristic step of banning rifle training conducted under the military's high school JROTC program. Eleven schools with rifle ranges were affected in the nation's eighth largest urban district.

Before the board meeting began, speakers representing local high schools and colleges addressed an outside crowd of 200 students, parents, teachers and community supporters. Some high schools sent so many students that two charter buses, courtesy of the AFSC, were used for transportation. Anticipating a long evening before the school board would discuss the rifle training issue, the Association of Raza Educators provided tamales to help sustain the crowd.

It wasn't until four hours into the board meeting, at 9:00 PM, that the agenda item came up for discussion. The vote was preceded by testimony from about 15 pro- and con- speakers in front of a crowd that was largely in favor of terminating the weapons training program. One school board member said that in all of his many years on the board, this was the most impressive student effort he had ever seen. Even two board members who opposed the resolution expressed their admiration for the students' involvement. When the decision was made, the resolution, which immediately banned all marksmanship training in the district, passed by a vote of 3-2. The crowd then spilled out of the auditorium to hold a loud and joyous celebration.

This achievement was made possible by a collaboration of students and various community groups who first came together in 2007 as the Education Not Arms Coalition. One of their main concerns was the way schools were tracking students into military training (via JROTC) while denying them adequate class alternatives, especially ones needed to qualify for college. Students from African American and Latino families were being disproportionately affected.

To address the problem, the coalition adopted three initial goals--convince the school district to:

-stop placing students into military science (JROTC) classes without their informed consent.
-stop telling parents and students that the class will help them qualify for college, when it won't.
-ban weapons training and JROTC gun ranges in San Diego schools.

All three goals have now been achieved, the first two by a superintendent's directive, the third by school board action. Throughout the over one-year long campaign, high school students have played a central role in educating and mobilizing their peers, with support from a variety of community and college groups.

Audio of the entire Feb. 10 hearing and school board decision is posted on the SD Unified site: http://www.sandi.net/indices/board.htm. Video should be added soon.

other supporters, rally at school district headquarters before school board meeting.

pledge of allegiance.

[SDCPJ] PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY: MANCHESTER HYATT BOYCOTT DEMO

Please forward widely:

Time:  11:00am -  1:00pm

Support justice for hotel workers and marriage equality!
Boycott Manchester Grand Hyatt

BACKGROUND

On July 10th, 2008, a coalition led by the San Diego labor movement and the LGBT community called for a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Manchester's Hyatt has brought the LGBT community UNITE HERE together to fight for equality for gay and lesbian couples and justice for the workers at his Hyatt hotel.  Doug Manchester has a history working against both:

·         Equality for lesbian and gay couples.  Doug Manchester is one of the leading funders ($125,000) of Proposition 8, a California ballot initiative that discriminates against LGBT couples.  The California LGBT community faces an extremely difficult fight to prevent an outright ban on their civil right to have legal recognition for same sex couples and equal protection for their families.  While Hyatt may officially disavow Manchester's contributions to Proposition 8 as a personal choice, the fact remains that their multi-million dollar LGBT marketing efforts must be seen as little more than sheer hypocrisy when the revenue this marketing attracts is then funneled into efforts that bite the hand which feeds them.  In such a situation, we always have the ability to choose not to feed them any longer.
·         Justice for Manchester Hyatt workers. Manchester's Hyatt allegedly forces housekeepers to clean more rooms than housekeepers at other Hyatt hotels, including the other Hyatt hotel in San Diego.  In 2006, housekeepers began lunch hour protests against working conditions in the hotel, saying that their daily room quota had been increased from 17 to 30 rooms per shift!  We have no reason to believe that Manchester has made any workload reductions to address these protests. Across the hotel industry, increasing workloads have put a greater strain on housekeepers; work speedups have led to increasing injury rates.  According to the Department of Labor, injury rates for hotel workers are 40% higher than the service sector average. Hotel housekeeper injuries are debilitating. Back injuries, housemaids' knee (bursitis), and shoulder pain can lead to permanent disability. Numerous studies have shown that unreasonable workloads are a serious occupational health issue; here are a few facts that highlight the severity of that problem:
In a recent survey of more than 600 hotel housekeepers in the U.S. and Canada, 91% said that they have suffered work-related pain. Of those who reported workplace pain:
_ 77% said their workplace pain interfered with routine activities.
_ Two out of every three workers visited their doctor to deal with workplace    pain.
_ 66% took pain medication just to get through their daily quota.

[SDCPJ] Stop weapons training in San Diego schools on Feb. 10!

Students, teachers and parents need you to come to the San Diego School Board meeting on Tues., Feb. 10, when the board will take up a proposal to eliminate high-powered pellet gun training from 11 schools with military science classes (JROTC).

Chicago Public Schools, which has the nation's largest JROTC program, ended rifle training in 1999 in response to the Columbine High School massacre. Here, after over a year of protests by students and parents, and recent news that gun violence in the community has taken the lives of three high school students, the San Diego school board will finally confront the issue on Feb. 10. You can help convince them to stop sending mixed messages to students and get out of the business of teaching young people to shoot guns!

Busloads of students from different schools will be rallying outside at 4 pm and addressing the board inside around 5 pm. They need you to help fill the auditorium!

Location: 4100 Normal St., San Diego. Arrive early to find parking.

Breaking News

This afternoon the U.S. Senate, during their consideration of the economic recovery bill, approved an egregious amendment offered by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) that stated “None of the amounts appropriated or otherwise made available by this Act may be used for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.” Unfortunately, the amendment passed by a wide vote margin of 73-24, and surprisingly included support from many high profile Senators including Chuck Schumer of New York, Dianne Feinstein of California, Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and several other Democratic and Republican Senators.

If the Coburn amendment language is included in the final conference version of this legislation, many arts groups will be prevented from receiving economic recovery funds from any portion of this specific stimulus bill. It is clear that there is still much work to be done in the Senate and in the media about the role that nonprofit arts organizations and artists play in the nation’s economy and workforce.

Plan of Action

Arts advocates need to quickly contact Senators who voted for the Coburn Amendment and express your extreme disappointment with their vote. We need these Senators to know that their vote would detrimentally impact nonprofit arts organizations and the jobs they support in their state. We have crafted a customized message for you to send to your Senators based on their vote on the Coburn Amendment. The correct letter, customized to each of your Senators will appear when you enter your zip code. If your Senator voted for this funding prohibition, you can send them a message expressing your disappointment and ask them to work to delete this language in the final conference bill with the House. If your Senator voted against the Coburn Amendment, you can thank them for their support of the arts.

We need as many news articles as possible this coming week to publish stories about the economic impact of the nonprofit arts industry and how the recession is negatively affecting arts groups across the country. Please click here to customize an opinion editorial to your local media. We have provided you with easy-to-use talking points.

Next week, Americans for the Arts will be sending you another action alert that targets the White House and the soon-to-be-named Senators and Representatives who will serve as conferees to the final economic recovery bill. Please be prepared to take action on this alert as well.

Americans for the Arts itself is submitting op-eds to several national newspapers and online blogs. We are enlisting high profile leaders to co-sign these letters as well.

Americans for the Arts is purchasing full-page ads titled “The Arts = Jobs” in Washington’s top political newspapers in Roll Call, Politico and The Hill on Monday and Tuesday of next week. We encourage you to post the ad on your social network sites.

San Diego Board of Supervisors to Cut Services While Continuing to Spend On Pet Projects

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors have long come under fire for their hardlined approach of outsourcing public services, not doing enough to increase access to vital services like food stamps to needy families, and making few concessions at the bargaining table.

Now the Board will consider its first round of layoffs, which threaten vital service like protection of our elderly from domestic abuse. Although the Supervisors consider themselves fiscally reponsible, they continue to spend millions of dollars on frivolous expenditures like "doggie parades" and expensive business trips.

Members of SEIU Local 221, along with concerned members of the community, are coming together to propose a humane and responsible alternative to this painful loss of services.

Come and support this proposal and tell the Board of Supervisors that service preservation is needed now more than ever!

"The People's Bailout" March & Rally

The State of California is facing a $42 Billion Budget Deficit, threatening the prosperity upon which our Golden State was built.
Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing painful cuts to vital programs that will hurt the neediest Californians, including slashing of services for our aging population, the working poor, people with developmental disabilities, low and moderate income families, and children.

All the while, the Bush Administration and Congress wrote blank checks to banks that have since been used to reward corporate executives with $18 Billion in bonuses.

It's time for the people's bailout! Come and speak out against the Governor's proposed cuts and call upon the Obama Administration to provide desperately needed federal stimulus as an alternative to the Governor's proposal.

VIDEO OCCUPATION 101

A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.

The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.

The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.
